A virus that led to the destruction of nearly 1,700 orchard acres in the state has been declared officially eradicated, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.

The Plum Pox Virus was found in Adams County peach trees in 1999, leading to a 300-square-mile quarantine and the destruction of trees, according to the department.

Following eradication efforts, three years of testing found the area free of the virus as of 2009, according to a news release.

Three years of further monitoring without the disease reappearing mean the disease is considered officially eradicated, the release stated.

Formal orchard surveys for the virus will not happen this year but standard nursery material testing will continue, the department said.
