The state on Friday released December's employment numbers, which saw modest growth in the number of people employed, yet also more people on the unemployment rolls.
About 12,000 more people were employed last month compared to the previous month, a 0.2 percent difference, according to the state Department of Labor and Industry. About 144,000 more people found work, or a 2.4 percent increase, as compared to December 2011.
However, those numbers increased alongside the civilian workforce, which grew by 171,000 people or 2.7 percent from a year ago, the department said. That also means that the number of unemployed people increased by 28,000, or 5.7 percent since last year.
The unemployment rate edged up 0.1 percentage points from November to 7.9 percent. That's 0.2 percentage points higher than December 2011.

Mining and logging: 40,100 employed; added 3,300 (9 percent)
Construction: 218,100 employed; lost 7,700 (3.4 percent)
Manufacturing: 569,600 employed; added 5,500 (1 percent)
Information: 91,300 employed; gained 2,000 (2.2 percent)
Financial activities: 311,200 employed; 3,800 more (1.2 percent)
Professional, business services: 726,000 employed; added 13,800 (1.9 percent)
Leisure and hospitality: 527,800 employed; added 15,000 (2.9 percent)
Other services: 253,600 employed; lost 4,100 or (1.6 percent)
