The Bon-Ton Stores Inc. has reported a sales increase for October compared with the same month last year and heads into holiday shopping season a bit ahead of last year's sales numbers, according to a news release.

Meanwhile, Rite Aid Corp. recorded a sales decrease for the month, the company said.

Comparable-store sales for Bon-Ton last month were 3.7 percent higher than October 2011, and total sales rose by the same percentage to more than $199 million, the release stated.

Cumberland County-based drugstore chain Rite Aid recorded a 1.1 percent decrease in same-store sales for October compared with the comparable period last year, according to a news release.

Total drugstore sales for the period were down 1.8 percent to more than $1.9 billion, the release stated.
