Pittsburgh-based Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, which has a growing midstate presence, last week announced an expansion into Michigan with the acquisition of the top home sales firm in southeastern Michigan.

Howard Hanna is the top home seller in Pennsylvania and Ohio with nearly $6 billion in total sales volume and more than 34,000 transactions last year.

It is the fourth-largest real estate company in the country, according to Colorado-based real estate consulting firm Real Trends, which ranks firms based on the number of closed transactions.

Howard Hanna has 144 offices in Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, West Virginia and Michigan. The acquisition of Edward Surovell Realtors added 10 offices.

The firm's five local offices are in Cumberland and Dauphin counties. Howard Hanna has said it plans to expand into Adams, Lancaster and York counties.
