The Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry is closing its Philadelphia unemployment compensation call center amid lower claims tallies.

Pennsylvania’s improving economy and declining number of claims have resulted in diminished federal funding for unemployment compensation administration used to operate the Philadelphia location, according to a news release from the L&I department.

The state’s initial unemployment compensation claims have decreased by 40.7 percent since January, and continued claims are down 37.5 percent, according to the release.

Call centers continue to operate across the state, and affected department staff members will receive employment services to help them return to the workforce as quickly as possible, the release stated.

The center is staffed by 75 permanent and intermittent employees and is scheduled to close Aug. 15.
