Pennsylvania's horse racing industry continues to benefit from the subsidies it receives from casino gambling, according to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.

The board last week released its fifth annual Racetrack Casino Benchmark Report. The horse industry’s 2011 share of taxes from slot machine revenue exceeded $228 million, the report said.

Among the report’s findings:

• An 250 percent increase in purses earned from 2006 to 2010, and an additional increase of 8 percent in 2011.

• A 45 percent increase in live races from 2006 to 2010, and an additional 1 percent increase in 2011.

• A 32 percent increase in wagers from 2006 to 2010, but a 10 percent decrease from 2010 to 2011.

The complete report is available on the board’s website.
