Interior construction for the planned Char's at Tracy Mansion restaurant in Midtown Harrisburg is expected to get under way June 1, owner Char Magaro said.

The nearly 6,000-square-foot restaurant space will be an American brasserie-style eatery. A brasserie is a type of French tavern with a relaxed upscale setting that serves single-plate dishes.

In September, Magaro closed Char’s Bella Mundo in Shipoke after massive damage caused by the flooding from Tropical Storm Lee. She ran the restaurant for nearly 10 years.

The new eatery, slated for a late summer opening, is expected to be the catalyst for the historic renovation of the Tracy Manor mansion on Front Street.

York-based Susquehanna Real Estate is the developer behind the $16 million project, which also will include office spaces and condominiums at the 20th-century mansion that has long sat vacant.

Service or retail businesses could occupy the adjacent carriage house, the developer said.

The mixed-use project will include construction of a seven-story, 32-unit condo building next to the mansion.
