Susquehanna Valley Construction will begin shifting the road to a temporary bridge just north of the existing span, a functionally obsolete bridge built in 1952 that must be removed if the state is to improve the I-83 and Route 581 interchange, PennDOT said today in a statement.

PennDOT awarded the $8 million contract to Fairview Township-based Susquehanna Valley Construction on March 28, it said. The contract includes:

• Temporary bridge installation.

• Removal of the existing Lowther Street bridge.

• Construction of a new two-span bridge to accommodate four lanes of mainline I-83 and three ramps underneath.

• Reconstruction of the roadway approaches.

• New drainage, guiderail and signs.

Construction management on the project is being done by the Harrisburg office of Michael Baker Jr. Inc.

The reconstruction of the York Split is expected to be complete by 2015.
