A nearly $2 million renovation project at Central Market in downtown York begins today, according to the market's website.

Lancaster County-based Simeral Construction Co. Inc. has been awarded the more than $1.9 million contract for the renovation and improvement project, according to the company.

York-based Murphy & Dittenhafer Inc. is the project architect, Simeral said in a statement.

The market at 34 W. Philadelphia St., constructed in 1888, in the fall of 2010 completed a previous renovation phase that included new restrooms.
