Specialty Hospital-Harrisburg, now at 2501 N. 3rd St., will build a floor in the Alex Grass Medical Sciences Building at the corner of 2nd and Chestnut streets, according to a news release.
The 38-bed hospital will be completed in early 2013 and add 25 employees to its 100-person staff, the company said.
The cost of the new facility is not being released, Select Medical spokesman Edwin Bodensiek said in an email.
The hospital will provide care for patients recovering from the most critical and complex conditions, known as long-term acute care. Patients stay longer and receive more intensive physician, nursing and therapeutic care than general hospitals typically offer, according to the release.
The move will allow more convenient access for patients, closer coordination with referring physicians and bring the hospital closer to nearby diagnostic services, Bodensiek said.
"Once it's finished, the new location will let us offer patients all-private rooms for the first time, as well as provide ancillary services such as CAT scans and other radiology," Select Specialty Hospital-Harrisburg CEO Tom Mullin said.
Select Medical, based in Lower Allen Township, also operates three other area hospitals:
