York is set to begin construction at the end of the month on a redevelopment project along the 600 block of West Princess Street.

The first phase of the Salem Square community development project involves rehabilitating 11 single-family homes. The second phase will involve demolishing six deteriorated residential units along the 100 block of South West Street and constructing five single-family homes in their place. About $1 million of federal money will be invested in the project.

The 16 new housing units will be sold to low- to moderate-income buyers.

The Salem Square project has been in the works since 2007. It is an initiative being spearheaded by groups including the City of York, the Y-Community Development Corp., an affiliate of the YMCA of York and York County, York County and the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency.
