Sleep apnea is a disorder in which a person stops breathing or breathes at an abnormally low rate during sleep. This interrupts the sleep cycle, causing the sufferer to wake up feeling exhausted. The result is feeling sluggish throughout the day—possibly dozing off at inopportune times. Beyond this, sleep apnea can lead to much more serious health issues, such as a greater risk for high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. Plus, the loud snoring and gasping associated with this disorder may also cause the sufferer’s partner to feel exhausted as well.
At this Health Talk, you’ll gain a full understanding of what sleep apnea is, why it happens and treatment options that can help you get back to a normal sleep cycle. It is presented by Kayalvizhi Sambandam, M.D., of Lancaster Pulmonary & Sleep Associates and Michelle Cantwell, DMD, of the Center for Dental Sleep Medicine.
